Kefalonia Nudist-report
After I have now already visited some Greek islands, Kefalonia was my destination in September/October 2022.
Many people had told me and in numerous travel guides I had read that Kefalonia should still be largely untouched by tourism and there should be numerous beaches, most of them very lonely and suitable for nudism.
Already once in advance : these statements are only very partly correct. Tourism has arrived at least on the coasts. The island is strongly in the hands of English tourists. All restaurants are adjusted to this. I spent a relaxing week under the Greek sun with delicious Greek food.
My hotel was located in the very south, the “Apostolata”. After a little more than 2 hours flight from Düsseldorf I arrived at the small airport of Kefalonia. The luggage was unloaded within a few minutes (Düsseldorf can cut a slice from). On foot it went then over a street and a traffic circle away to the car rental Europcar. Here there was for about 200, – Euro a Nissan Micra with full insurance. then it went off to the south. Driving on Kefalonia is exhausting. One does not drive 300 meters straight ahead, there are apparently only curves. For the 30 km to Skala in the south I needed 50 minutes.
My hotel was a bit outside of Skala, on a slope. I had a room with sea view, everything was top…..until the cleanliness. The cleaning lady was not very motivated despite tip. The hotel was the starting point for my excursions on the island.
When looking for beautiful beaches, I have always referred to Captain Barefood, which is an English site that describes the nudist options of visitors. I focused on the beaches that were actually recommended by some naturists. I ignored reports about beaches where nudists have been seen before. There are no official nudist beaches on Kefalonia and no beach is truly secluded.
Keeping the island of Kefalonia in mind on the map, I limited myself to the right part. From my location to Myrtos Beach it was a 1.5 hour drive. There my limit was already reached. To switch to the left part, the drive would have been much longer. Skala itself has a beach several hundred meters long, partly sand, partly gravel. It goes there quite steeply into the water. There are sunbeds and beach bars…..but no chance for nudism.
From Skala I drove in the direction of Argostoli, the capital. The first beach you reach after 10 minutes is Mounda Beach. You can drive by car to the hotel there, park and go to the left. At first there are a few sunbeds, after that you can take off your clothes. The beach is a natural beach, the water is clean and clear. On this beach I spent a lot of time and stark naked. Mostly there were about 10 other nudists spread out on this section of the beach. But that was about it.
If you continue on the main road for 20 minutes in the direction of the capital, you will come to the “Sissi Beach”. There is a sign to the old monastery (Monarchi). If you turn left there, you can drive up to the monastery, then the road becomes impassable and it goes downhill quite steeply. On foot you have to walk for about 20 minutes through a pine forest and come to a little visited beach. Besides me, there were three other people there, all naked. The beach is also gravel and sand mixed. Because of the high waves that day, you could barely get in the water because you couldn’t see the rocks that come right out on the beach. The funny thing about this beach is the spring water that splashes over a pipe from a rock. It was a welcome ice cold shower. This beach was great, but getting back to the car pushed me to my limits. That was then the “out” for another visit to this actually great beach.
After this beach it goes then already closer to the capital. There are also beaches here, but all very well visited and therefore not suitable for nude bathing. The capital Argostoli is actually nothing special. Here the ferries arrive, you can sit in one of the many cafes at the harbor.
If you drive even further north you will come to Myrtos Beach. This is the beach that can be found on every postcard. Of course, this beach is also well visited. Only one man was naked. He was sitting at the end of the beach with a camera and a huge lens on a tripod. He was probably photographing seabirds, but maybe he was photographing half-naked tourists. In general, I have often met shady guys with inconspicuous cameras on the beaches. Although I am actually used to being filmed, I found this very unpleasant.
At Myrtos Beach I was exactly 20 minutes. It was very unpleasant to get into the really gorgeous water, because the many stones pressed their grooves into my feet. Water shoes are absolutely necessary here. I then drove further to Fiskardo, in the very north and then along the east coast back to the south. Here there are many small bays where you should be able to enjoy the sun naked. I was in two bays, in each bay were two to three yachts, partying people, all with swimming trunks. Then we went back in the direction of Skala. Then the day trip was over, about 90 km driven but 5 hours driving time.
To be honest, I lost the desire to look for more nudist places. Maybe there are still some…..I have not found them except for the Mounda-beach. In the meantime I have become a bit more demanding and older. It is no longer enough for me to hike far away to a lonely beach, to spend the whole day there without drinks, without a midday snack and without a lounger…..just to be able to be naked.
So I only ever spent half the day at Mounda Beach, then went to a taverna, had something to eat and drink. Then it went to the hotel pool or Skala beach with bikini.
